Quick Thoughts on “White Noise”
The new movie from Netflix

- I’ve read the novel at least 2x, but not recently
- This film is a hot mess
- It’s part academic exercise, commentary on consumerism, and then a weird subplot on modern pharmaceuticals
- It didn’t hold together the way a movie should
- Greta Gerwig (Babette) and Adam Driver (Jack) are the two leads, but very often it seems more like a play and not a movie. They elevate their voice and seem to overexaggerate
- The book is good! Read it. The movie was an exercise that doesn’t really tie together. That said, maybe one day we’ll all love it.
- All that said, Don DeLillo is an amazing writer and will be taught for years to come. I’ve read more of him lately (started Mao and Libra, but couldn’t quite hang in that season of my life) along with Zero K and Falling Man. These last 2 are short and accessible. Try those and then White Noise.
